Preventive healthcare isn't just about staying healthy today—it's about protecting your future. Many serious health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, develop gradually and often without noticeable symptoms. Regular health screenings help detect problems early, when treatment is typically more effective.
As we age, our health needs and risk factors change, making preventive health screenings more important than ever. Understanding which screenings are recommended at each stage of adulthood—based on guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)—can help you take charge of your health, detect potential problems early, and reduce your risk of preventable disease.
At MEM Health Promotion Services, we believe prevention is one of the most powerful tools for living a healthier, longer, and more independent life.
We are accepting new patients in Texas and Florida.

Why Health Screenings Matter
Health screenings can:
Detect disease before symptoms develop
Identify risk factors for chronic illness
Prevent complications through early treatment
Improve quality of life
Reduce unnecessary hospitalizations
Support healthy aging
Many chronic diseases—including high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol—are often called "silent conditions" because they may not cause symptoms until significant damage has already occurred.
Health Screenings to Prioritize in Your 40s
Your 40s are an ideal time to establish healthy habits and begin routine preventive screenings.
Recommended Screenings
Blood Pressure - At least annually (more often if elevated or at higher risk)
Cholesterol Screening - Regular lipid testing based on your cardiovascular risk factors
Diabetes Screening - Recommended for adults ages 35–70 who have overweight or obesity, or sooner if additional risk factors are present
Weight & BMI - Regular monitoring and lifestyle counseling when appropriate
Colorectal Cancer Screening - Begin at age 45 for adults at average risk
Breast Cancer Screening (Women) - Mammogram every 2 years beginning at age 40 for average-risk women
Cervical Cancer Screening (Women) - Continue recommended Pap test and/or HPV screening through age 65
Prostate Health (Men) - Discuss prostate cancer screening with your healthcare provider based on your personal and family history
Skin check - Look for any new or changing moles or spots. A dermatologist can check for skin cancer signs.
Eye exam - Vision can change in your 40s. Regular eye exams help detect glaucoma, cataracts, or other issues.
Health Screenings in Your 50s
Your 50s are a critical decade for maintaining long-term health and preventing complications from chronic disease.
Continue all recommended screenings from your 40s, plus:
Comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment
Diabetes monitoring
Cholesterol management
Vision examinations
Hearing evaluations
Bone health assessment (particularly for women after menopause or adults with risk factors)
Recommended adult immunizations, including shingles and annual influenza vaccination
This is also an excellent time to review lifestyle habits, including nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and tobacco or alcohol use.
Health Screenings in Your 60s and Beyond
Healthy aging focuses on maintaining independence and quality of life.
Continue routine screenings while adding greater attention to:
Bone Density Screening - Women should receive osteoporosis screening beginning at age 65; earlier if at increased risk
Cognitive Health - Discuss any memory or thinking concerns with your healthcare provider
Fall Risk Assessment - Evaluate balance, mobility, and home safety
Medication Review - Regular review of prescriptions, supplements, and possible interactions
Vision Screening & Hearing Evaluation - Continue regular checks to address changes.
Ongoing blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes management
Vaccinations remain especially important in older adults, including influenza, pneumococcal, shingles, COVID-19 (as recommended), and tetanus boosters.

Prevention Is Personal
While age-based recommendations provide a helpful guide, your individual health history, family history, lifestyle, and existing medical conditions may mean you need screenings earlier or more often.
Examples include:
Strong family history of cancer
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Smoking history
Obesity
Heart disease
Autoimmune disorders
Your healthcare provider can help develop a screening plan tailored specifically to you.
